Spirituality in the Christian Life
Psalm 86

1 Hear, O LORD, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.
Prayer starts with recognizing that our strength is insufficient to get thru the day- Stephen Hawkings is wrong!
The Psalmist starts in the position of humility
Recall a time when you were most needy and God answered you through prayer. What does it take to live like that all the time?

4 Bring joy to your servant,
for to you, O Lord,
I lift up my soul.
Worship is moving your heart to find joy in the Lord
Seeing ourselves as servant and Jesus as Lord is key to true worship
What does it mean to lift up our soul?

11 Teach me your way, O LORD,
and I will walk in your truth;
give me an undivided heart,
that I may fear your name.
The Son of Man came to serve and not be served
An undivided heart is a heart that seeks to serve Jesus first
Think of all the people in the Bible who feared God… who were they and what did they do? (eg. Ex. 1:19, Ex. 9:20, Jon. 1:16, )

Singing as Worship
12 I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart;
I will glorify your name forever.
It’s not coincidence that the longest book in the Bible (by chapters) is Psalms. Song is vital in the Christian life because spirituality isn’t ideological adherence
God is personal, he’s not far away and removed from our life
What event/time-in-your-life shaped your vision of worship?

Walking with Jesus
17 Give me a sign of your goodness,
that my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
for you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.
Signs are good, they tell you where to go and most of the time they are visible and permanent
God displays himself for our encouragement and rebuke
What event taught you that God was a comforter and a shelter? How do you get back to that place?
