Famous Women in Christian History

Eve and Sarah Edwards

Being a Helper

Gen 2:8 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

  1. be a helper and not a gossip girl/self-absorbed

  2. are you a thorn or a helper?

  3. Helper does not mean slave but it does mean servant

3:6 She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

  1. Eve wants to regain Adam’s trust but he’s bitter now cuz she jacked him

  2. She sinned because she wanted to be like God

  3. beware the sin of self absorbtion- care for your family not your own glory

16 To the woman he said,”I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.Your desire will be for your husband,and he will rule over you.”

  1. childbirth- greatest joy is now painful but raising children is still glorious- not lame

  2. your desire will be to find your identity in a man

  3. don’t by whiney, carry yourself with dignity and not as a person to be ruled over

Sarah Edwards

  • Sarah was sociable, lively, great at music, cheerful (Pastor’s daughter)- godly character

  • Johnathan was shy, awkward, tall and lanky

  • Johnathan thought she was the most wonderful Christian woman he had ever met- dreamed of her very and he was distracted by her (wrote daydreams in greek textbook)

Charismatic experience!

  • Sarah had a bout of depression->awakening

  • heavily influenced Johnathan’s view on gifts

  • life changed after this experience- awakening of affections for God

  • it was described as an animal-like agitation that erupted into exultation

Letter to her daughter Esther:

“What shall I say: A holy and good God has covered us with a dark cloud. O that we may kiss the rod, and lay our hands on our mouths! The Lord has done it. He has made me adore his goodness that we had him so long. But my God lives; and he has my heart. O what a legacy my husband, and your father, has left to us! We are all given to God: and there I am and love to be. Your ever affectionate mother, Sarah Edwards.”
